U.S. ALCOHOL TESTING OF AMERICA ACQUIRES PATENT OF A DEVICE
 WHICH MEASURES BLOOD PARAMETERS
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif., Feb. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- James C. Witham, president of U.S. Alcohol Testing of America, Inc. (AMEX: AAA) announced today that U.S. Alcohol Testing of America, Inc. has acquired an exclusive patent assignment (U.S. patent No. 5,066,859 issued Nov. 19, 1991) of a device which measures critical blood parameters such as hematocrit and oxygen saturation directly through a standard syringe wall. These blood parameters are measured approximately 234 million times per year in the U.S. One hundred and thirteen million are of the type that could be done with this device. Hematocrit is the volume of cellular components in plasma and since the red blood cell makes up over 95 percent of the cellular components, hematocrit is taken to be the volume of red blood cells.
The red blood cell is a very important component of the blood because it represents the main carrier of oxygen to body tissues. The level of hematocrit affects the efficiency of the blood to carry oxygen. Events that could cause the hematocrit to become too low or too high include:
-- Addition of fluids to blood by IV
-- Loss of fluid as in the case of dehydration
-- Addition of red blood cells by transfusion or blood packing known
to be done by some athletes.
-- Loss of blood due to hemorrhage due to emergency conditions, such
 as, trauma or after surgery.
-- Hemolysis of red blood cells due to near drowning.
-- Drugs that stimulate red blood cell production.
The uniqueness of the device is that it will eliminate the need for further blood handling. Thus, the risks of contracting diseases, such as AIDS and Hepatitis B, is reduced.
