NEWNAN, Ga.-The British are coming -- again. No less an Englishman than Prince Philip himself was on hand when Slumberland USA Corp., a privately held English manufacturer of mattresses, opened a production line of innerspring mattresses here.

Slumberland -- not to be confused with the U.S. furniture retailer -- will market its high-end bedding throughout North and South America. The mattresses will be produced in a $20 million plant here, southwest of Atlanta, and is expected to employ 150 people.

The in-store retail distribution for the mattress line has not been announced, but Slumberland USA did open its first retail store in the Buckhead district of Atlanta on March 10.

Retail sales by telephone and Internet will be handled by 800-MATTRESS, a New York retailer. Slumberland has already been promoting itself through two Web sites, and

Slumberland produces its own metal innersprings, which it uses in the production of its upper-end beds. The plant will also house the headquarters, a warehouse and a retail store. Bedding features include a pocketed continuous coil spring system called Posture Springing, a Belgian damask ticking, brass vents, cloth handles, handtufting and a 15-year warranty.

Slumberland USA will be headed by Peter Buckley, chairman; Mark Owen, sales and marketing director; and Tom Burns, advertising director.

To help launch the new venture, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was present last week to unveil a plaque commemorating the opening. Slumberland USA beds have been selected by the British Royal Households, and the company is entitled to display the royal warrants of Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother on its promotional materials. Prince Philip was the guest of honor at a fund-raising gala cohosted by the British American Business Group, the British Consulate-General and the United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta. Proceeds will go to charity.

"The people of Georgia will sleep better for it," observed His Royal Highness before retiring for a lunch of champagne, barbecue and baked beans.

Newnan was chosen for its proximity to Atlanta and for state and local financial incentives.
