U.K. APPROVES $260 MILLION EXXON/SHELL GAS DEVELOPMENT IN THE NORTH SEA

IRVING, Texas, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Exxon Corporation (NYSE: XON) announced today that U.K. government approval has been received for the $260 million development of Exxon/Shell reserves in the Barque South field and an extension of the Barque field, both of which are in the Sole Pit area of the southern North Sea.
The development project will add 48 percent, or 700 billion standard cubic feet, of additional reserves to those of the already developed Sole Pit area. Exxon and Shell each hold a 50 percent interest in the project.
This project is the second phase of development of a cluster of reservoirs in the Sole Pit area and will utilize the infrastructure of the two existing Sole Pit fields, Barque and Clipper.
Barque South lies one mile to the south of the Barque field and will be developed by drilling from the existing Barque platform. Production will begin in October 1994.
The Barque extension is 5.5 miles southeast of the field. The unmanned Barque Extension PL platform will be a 15-well slot four-legged steel jacket wellhead platform with minimum facilities, similar in design to the nearby Galleon unit platform in which Exxon/Shell hold a majority interest. It will stand in 94 feet of water.
In addition to development of Barque South and Barque Field Extension, three additional long-reach horizontal wells will be drilled from the existing Barque and Clipper platforms to access additional gas reserves at the extremities of the already developed structures of the two fields.
Horizontal drilling is the most economic means of developing these additional reserves. There has been considerable use of horizontal drilling in the Sole Pit area. Thirteen horizontal wells have been drilled in Barque and Clipper to date.
