U.K.'S BRADFORD CABLE COMMUNICATIONS SELECTS SCIENTIFIC-ATLANTA
TO PROVIDE $20 MILLION IN CABLE TV EQUIPMENT
ATLANTA, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Bradford Cable Communications, Ltd. has chosen Scientific-Atlanta, Inc. (NYSE: SFA) to provide $20 million (US) of cable TV equipment over several years, including Model 8602 advanced set-top terminals, headends and AM fiber and distribution electronics in a Fiber-to-the-Serving-Area architecture.
Serving the Bradford metropolitan district, the entire $170 (US) million system consists of 1,100 miles of plant in West Yorkshire in northern England and passes 175,000 residences. It will provide both cable and telephone service.
Scientific-Atlanta will supply its Model 8602 home terminal, an advanced communications system with easy-to-use on-screen menus and messaging capabilities. Scientific-Atlanta will also provide two headends in Keithley and Bradford and associated AM fiber transmission equipment and distribution electronics to operate within Scientific- Atlanta's Fiber-to-the-Serving-Area (FSA) architecture.
"We chose Scientific-Atlanta because of its advanced and proven technology with the 8602 and FSA; its ability to provide an entire system; and its excellent reputation for reliability and customer support," said Bruce M. Massey, managing director of Bradford Cable. Massey also pointed out that the telephone system will be integrated with the FSA architecture which will allow savings in construction costs through the use of common ducts throughout the system.
"We are gratified to have been selected by Bradford Cable and look forward to working with them to bring subscribers a state-of-the-art system," said Stan Sands, managing director of Scientific-Atlanta's Broadband United Kingdom office.
One of a family of 8600 international terminals, the Model 8602 is designed specifically for the U.K. market. Its on-screen features -- such as channel name and number, time and mute -- upgrade older television sets.
Ordering and confirmation of PPV events appear on screen with the 8600, and automatic on-screen notices remind subscribers when the PPV event is about to start.
 Other features include:
-- VCR programming of up to eight events over 14 days
 -- preselected favorite channels
 -- parental control
 -- volume control
-- large display with up to 240 characters per screen for messaging and up to 16 pages per message.
On-screen messaging permits operators to send subscribers special program offers and targeted promotions. Program information, community events calendars, and traffic and weather warning messages make cable service more valuable to subscribers.
Video baseband and RF sync suppression scrambling techniques provide more than 100 different modes of scrambling. Operators can reserve maximum levels of random video and sync inversion for the most valuable premium and PPV programming.
More than 1 million 8600s have been delivered or are on order for more than 50 systems in Western Europe, North America, Asia and Latin America.
Scientific-Atlanta is a world leader in cable television electronics, satellite-based communications networks and instrumentation for industrial, telecommunications and government applications.
