 U S WEST NEWVECTOR, MOTOROLA JOIN IN 10-YEAR ALLIANCE TO
 TRIPLE CALL CAPACITY, OFFER NEW CELLULAR FEATURES
 BELLEVUE, Wash., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- U S WEST NewVector and Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group today announced the formation of a revolutionary 10-year alliance to upgrade cellular operations and enhance call features throughout NewVector's service areas. Under the terms of the agreement, NewVector's systems in Seattle, Minneapolis and Denver will be replaced by Motorola's new Narrow-band Advanced Mobile Phone Service (NAMPS) cellular infrastructure equipment.
 The alliance, the first of its kind in the cellular industry, will result in further digital conversion of NewVector's operations and, through the use of NAMPS technology, offer leading-edge digital messaging services, announced John DeFeo, NewVector's president and chief executive officer.
 DeFeo said a chief element of the alliance is conversion of NewVector's system infrastructure to NAMPS. NAMPS, already an international standard in countries such as Japan, boosts cellular call capacity by as much as 300 percent, enhances voice transmission quality and provides digital signalling and control to customer phones.
 Plans are that NAMPS conversion will begin this fall. New equipment for 328 cell sites and eight switches initially will be installed in systems throughout Washington, Oregon, Colorado and Minnesota. Further conversions are slated for 1993, DeFeo said.
 Another key element of NAMPS technology is enhanced Digital Message Service (DMS). DeFeo and Jack Scanlon, corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola's Cellular Infrastructure Group, said DMS features allow customers to use cellular handsets like pagers. Features include:
 -- Voice Mail Status, whereby a voice mail box automatically alerts users when new voice mail is received;
 -- Call-back Number, whereby a call-back number is "deposited" in the cellular user's phone. If the phone is busy, turned off or out of range, the number is deposited when the unit returns to service;
 -- Short Messaging, whereby subscribers receive text messages of up to 14 characters on the handset's display.
 Additionally, as part of the alliance, NewVector and Motorola have agreed to cooperate in evaluating potential new products for the wireless marketplace. With respect to digital technology, DeFeo pointed out that NewVector's systems already operate with digital networks and the alliance will result in conversion of NewVector's control operations.
 NewVector's new Motorola system will be able to support new cellular technologies such as Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital service when they become available. However, DeFeo said NewVector will continue to use its current transmission technology until TDMA and CDMA are tested more thoroughly and are able to provide more customer features and functions.
 The alliance is unique because of its 10-year term and it "cements a commitment to provide leading-edge technology to customers in ways once thought unimaginable," Scanlon said.
 Currently, a high percentage of NewVector customers use portable phones primarily because they are light-weight, convenient to use and economical. DeFeo said the NAMPS system will be designed to accommodate the growth in portable phone use.
 Motorola and U S WEST NewVector also share an alliance of Total Quality Management. DeFeo said, "Quality is part of the daily process at NewVector. We are proud to align ourselves with a company who shares the commitment to quality practices."
