U S WEST CELLULAR TO TEST MICROCELL SYSTEM IN SEATTLE
BELLEVUE, Wash., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- U S WEST Cellular announced today it will begin testing a microcell system on Seattle's Capital Hill. Microcells represent a new generation of cellular technology offering improved and expanded cellular coverage.
Microcells are a further enhancement of the original cellular concept because they target specific coverage areas more precisely than conventional systems. Connected to cell sites via a fiber optic network, microcells act as extensions to the cell site increasing call capacity and targeting hard-to-cover areas.
"Microcells are tiny -- the size of a small box -- which offers flexibility in their placement," said John DeFeo, president and chief operating officer of U S WEST NewVector Group Inc., parent company for U S WEST Cellular.
"For example, historically, tunnels and office buildings with a heavy concentration of cellular phone users have challenged cellular companies. Microcells is an emerging technology that address these challenges," continued DeFeo.
The introduction of microcell technology is a joint trial between U S WEST Cellular and U S WEST Communications. The system will be up and running by the middle of February.
Headquartered in Bellevue, U S WEST NewVector Group Inc. has operations in 15 midwestern, western and southwestern states. The company operates 27 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSA) and 21 Rural Service Areas (RSA) Cellular systems. U S WEST Cellular is a division of NewVector. NewVector also offers paging service in 88 markets.
NewVector is a subsidiary of U S WEST Inc. (NYSE: USW), a diversified corporation based in Englewood, Colo. U S WEST owns and operates companies both domestically and internationally in directory publishing and marketing services, radio communications, communications systems sales and services, communications software and financial services.
