Two abridged Dewey publications are now available from OCLC.
OCLC Forest Press has announced that the abridged versions of two of its publications are now available. Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 13, provides smaller libraries with the up-to-date features of the unabridged 21st edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index.
The improved and updated schedules for 350-354 Public Administration, 370 Education, 570 Life Sciences, 580 Plants, and 590 Animals are provided in a single volume. Revised table numbers for countries of the former Soviet Union; updated terminology; and new topics including virtual reality, Internet, rap music, and in-line skating are also included in the new abridged edition. Over 40 pages of additional index terms are provided.
"Abridged edition 13 allows libraries with collections of under 20,000 volumes to keep abreast of developments in the field of classification while staying within their budgets," said Peter J. Paulson, executive director of OCLC Forest Press.
Abridged 13 Workbook is a tool for catalogers and students working with the new Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 13.
Written by two experts in the field -- Sydney W. Davis, senior lecturer at Charles Sturt University, School of Information Studies, Australia, and Gregory R. New, assistant editor at the Decimal Classification Division of the Library of Congress -- Abridged 13 Workbook introduces students to the main features of the DDC and to the practical application of assigning classification numbers. For those already familiar with the Dewey Decimal Classification and wishing to improve their skills, the workbook explains the use of the manual, the tables, the schedules, and the relative index, and it examines the new features found in the 13th abridged edition.
Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, Edition 13 (ISBN: 0-910608-59-8) is available for $90; Abridged 13 Workbook (ISBN: 0-910608-61-X) is available for $20.
