NEARLY a million French TV viewers tuned to watch a travel show on Wales which featured tweeting farmer Gareth Wyn Jones.

Echappees Belles - Beautiful Escape - was shown on one of the most widely watched channels in the country, France 5, over the weekend.

The show's presenter Sophie Jovillard was seen visiting Gareth's farm in Llanfairfechan for an authentic Welsh hill farming experience.

Gareth works with Celticos, based in the Conwy Valley, to give tourists a taste of what a Welsh working hill farm is like.

As the crew were so impressed with Gareth, they also asked him to show Sophie around Conwy Castle, something he wasn't expecting.

"Sophie and I worked very well together, and the show was an excellent advert for North Wales and Wales as a whole," he said. "I think the French TV producers had Googled Welsh farmers and I had come up, so that's why I got the phone call.

"They wanted to see a Welsh hill farm and the Carneddau ponies, and saw how Welsh lamb was produced - Welsh lamb is very popular in France.

"We also took them to Edwards of Conwy, were they met Ieuan Edwards and were so impressed by the shop and the crew loved the pies."

Gareth, who shot to prominence when he tweeted about his battle to save his sheep in the snow storms of March 2013, added: "I was a bit surprised by having to be a tour guide around Conwy Castle, but I think I did ok - it was all a bit tongue in cheek.

"The show attracted 932,000 viewers, and the response has been fantastic. "I've seen a lot of French tweets and comments on Facebook saying how beautiful Wales is and so on."

Sophie Jovillard said: "I really loved doing the show in Wales. And my fondest memory of it will be first of all the landscapes were so pure and wild.

"But also the kindness, the generosity and the hospitality of the Welsh, and above all their big sense of humour will always stay with me."
