A Turkish Airlines jet with 135 passengers on board has crashed while attempting to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

The Boeing 737-800 airliner is said to have split into three parts when it hit the ground next to the runway.

According to reports, as many as 50 passengers are said to be uninjured in the incident.

Still images shown on Dutch television showed the plane on the ground, with the tail section of the fuselage broken off, and a wide crack in the fuselage just behind cockpit.

The jet did not appear to be on fire.

Officials at Istanbul's Ataturk airport said the plane had departed earlier from Istanbul.
