Tunisia to modernize statistical methods.

A workshop was held on Monday, in Tunis on "new statistical methods and standards" to be implemented by the Tunisian National Statistical Institute (NSI).<p>Chairing the workshop, the Minister of Development and International Cooperation, Mr. Nouri Jouini said thatAaTunisia's statistical priorities focused particularly on important sectors such as methodologies surveys for employment, the revision of methods of calculating poverty indicators, revision of the national accounting system, development of business statistics, monitoring of economic conditions, the revision of statistical classifications and the distribution and access to statistical information.

The National Statistics Institute develops a quarterly survey to supervise employment during the year. In addition, the NSI has begun to revise the current system of national accounts with the technical support of French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE), in line with the national accounting systemAa in use at the United Nations.

Mr. Nouri Jouini said that NSI begun to implement a development program focused on business statistics and a series of investigations involving micro-enterprises. To support these actions, a twinning program was conducted in collaboration with Italian institutions in cooperation with the European Union, he added.
