LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

The countdown to the Tulip Time Scholarship Games has begun. Are you ready to challenge your athletic, performing, spelling, and swimming skills? Join us for a chance to participate and win in our annual scholarship events. We'll see you there!
 Tulip Time 2001

 (and parents and grandparents)


READY, SET, SERVE

Do you dream of playing on a college tennis team someday. Start by entering our tennis contest and winning a scholarship.

To compete, you will hit a total of six shots: 1 forehand, 1 backhand, 1 forehand volley, 1 backhand volley, and 2 serves. The court will be laid out with score targets of five, four, and three points. Hit the ball in the singles court or the proper service box and you receive 1 point. The participant with the highest score in his/her age group will win the scholarship. In the event of a tie, we will have a playoff with the high score winning. Scholarship amount: $1,000

TALENT

Do you have a special talent? Do you like to sing? Do you play a musical instrument? Maybe you like to act or tell jokes. Come try out for the Talent Show Contest. If chosen, you could compete for a college scholarship!

If you are a singer or musician, you can compete in our talent show and win a trip to audition at the prestigious and world-renowned Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.

The Institute has trained many famous composers, conductors, and musicians, such as Leonard Bernstein and Andre Previn. This is an all-expense paid trip for you and a parent or teacher. Scholarship amount: $2,500

The colorful Clown Band is a favorite tradition at the Fitness Farm and Scholarship Games. Participants of all ages, their parents, and grandparents enjoy the sights and sounds of these talented Indianapolis musicians.

Indianapolis is the Amateur Sports Capital of the World and home to the world-famous Natatorium. Athletes from around the world dream of competing at the Natatorium. Come see the site of the 2000 Olympic Team Swimming Trials where world records are set and dreams realized. (www.iunat.iupui.edu)

FORE

We're looking for golfers who want to amaze us with their incredible talent. Scholarships will be given to the best performers in our golf contests. Scholarship amount: $1,000

SHOOTING HOOPS

Hit the court and demonstrate dazzling dribbling and shooting skills, and you could be on your way to winning a scholarship. Can you imagine being on a college basketball team and competing in a NCAA tournament. Work hard and dream big. Each player gets 2 shots from 5 different positions on the court. The player who hits the most out of 10 shots wins. In the event of a tie, there will be a shoot-off. Scholarship amount: $1,000

PUT YOUR RIGHT FOOT IN (LEFT FOOT, TOO)

If soccer is your sport, we are waiting for you. Using your feet, you will be dribbling the ball through cones and shooting the ball to the goal. Practice those kicks and win a scholarship at the Tulip Time Games. Scholarship amount: $1,000

DO YOU KNOW YOUR TREES?

The Tree Identification Contest challenges your knowledge of trees. Correctly identify and spell the names of the trees in our contest, and you could be on your way to a college scholarship. A complete list of trees was published in the March 2001 issue. Scholarship amount: $2,500

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO

How long does it take you to complete a course that is 200 meters long? Finish closest to your estimated, or predicted, time, and win a college scholarship! To practice for the event, ask an adult to help you measure a distance of 200 meters in your neighborhood or on a running track. Get a stopwatch. See how long it takes you to walk or run 200 meters. Keep track of your progress on the Practice Log below. Time yourself as often as you can. One past winner finished in 43.58 seconds, coming closest to his predicted time. In this event, boys and girls compete together in one 12-and-under age group. Use the sample log entries below to guide you in charting your progress and "zeroing" in on your predicted time. Scholarship amount: $1,000

PRACTICE YOUR CRAWL TURN

1. Swim toward the wall. Approach at your normal speed. Start your somersault about three to five feet from the wall. Bring your arms down to your thighs.

2. Keep your legs together. Turn your palms down, facing the bottom of the pool. To begin your somersault, press your hands downward, and drop your, chin to your chest.

3. Bring your feet out of and over the water, tucking your knees up as you somersault. This technique will increase the speed of your turn. You should now be face-up under the water with your hands moving forward.

4. Plant your feet firmly against the wall with your knees bent. Push off the wall as hard as you can, stretching your arms forward and pressing them against your ears. (Begin to turn onto your stomach as you push off.)

5. Glide through the water with your arms and toes pointed, then kick your legs and aim for the surface to begin your stroke.

SPRING BIATHLON

We are looking for swimmers and runners to compete in this two-part event. You will run 1 mile and then swim 100 yards. You will also need to perfect your flip turns because this event includes 7 flip turns. Ask your parents to help you measure a mile so you can start practicing the run. Start out slowly and try to shave seconds off your personal best each time you run your course. The fastest runner and swimmer in their age group will win a scholarship to a college with a great swim team. Scholarship amount: $2,000

DIVE RIGHT IN!

Are you a swimmer? Compete to win a scholarship to a great college. The Fitness Farm pool is now covered by a bubble and is heated to a comfortable 70 degrees while the pool is maintained at 90 degrees. Scholarship amount: $1,000

Ages 7 to 8 Freestyle (50 yards)
Ages 9 to 10 Freestyle, breast stroke
 (100 yards), or backstroke
 (50 yards)
Ages 11 to 12 Freestyle, breast stroke

Take the Challenge

Join us on April 21 at the Tulip Time Scholarship Games and test your fitness! You could earn the most coveted award if you match the standards in exercises like curl-ups, the shuttle run, the V-sit reach, the one-mile run, and pull-ups. This PRESIDENTIAL Award is earned by athletes in the country's top 15 percent.

Curl-Ups

Test your abdominal strength! How many curl-ups can you perform in one minute?

Shuttle Run

You'll run twice from the starting line to another line 30 feet away, grab a small block, and run with it back to the starting line. We'll time you to see how fast you can make it.

V-Sit Reach

Sit on the floor with your heels eight to twelve inches apart and lean forward with your legs straight. See how far beyond your heels you can touch.

Pull-Ups

Our pull-up event will help you judge your upper-body strength. Use an overhand grasp (palms facing away from the body) and count how many pull-ups you can do.

One-Mile Run

Try to complete a mile run within the official limits.

The NATIONAL Physical Fitness Award is a step on the path to achieving physical fitness. If you work hard, make a commitment, and give I00 percent, you will build up the skills necessary to achieve the ultimate goal of winning the highest honor--the Presidential Physical Fitness Award. Helpful Tips on the Road to Fitness:

1. Chart your progress, Gradually increase how hard, how long, and how many times you do an exercise over a period of time.

2. Exercise regularly. Set up a schedule and work out every day--at least 3 or 4 times per week. What you don't use you lose.

3. Get stronger. For a muscle to become stronger, it must work harder. During your exercise, gradually do more repetitions of an exercise. Take your time, don't over do it, and strength improvements will come.

The National Physical Fitness Award recognizes youth who score at or above the 50th percentile on five tests. Earn the award by reaching the scores listed below.
