Tsingtao trademark dispute is settled

The Qingdao Brewery, Monarch Import Co. and Sharimalia Food Corp. announced that a settlement has been reached in the trademark and unfair competition action brought by Qingdao and Monarch in a Chicago federal court against Sharimalia.

The the two sides were in dispute over similar brand names. The Qingdao Brewery produces Tsingtao beer, and it is imported to the U.S. by Monarch. Sharimalia, meanwhile, owns the Tsingchuen brand and is the beer's exclusive marketer. Additionally, Tsingchuen is brewed by China's Qindao Brewery.

As part of the resolution reached, the parties have agreed that the Tsingchuen beer packaging, advertising and promotional materials will be modified to assure that the parties' products are not confused with each other.

Both Monarch vice president Glen Steinman and Sharimalia's Paul Chu noted in a recent joint statement, "The parties are pleased that our differences have been resolved and that we can once again turn our attention to the business of selling beer."
