Truth for Bush.

SIR - So Sinn Fein is banned from the White House and Gerry Adams is warned by American politicians 'that he risks becoming an ostracised Yasser Arafat figure' if he does not show a greater commitment to the Ulster peace process. All this follows the bank raid at the Belfast Northern Bank in December and the murder of Belfast republican Robert McCartney a few weeks ago.

Looking at the matter at its most cynical, may one venture to ask how many deaths, during the last two years, may be laid at the door of George W Bush? An estimate of hundreds of thousands would not be wide of the mark - including over 1,500 American troops. I am no friend of Gerry Adams's Sinn Fein (any more than I am of Tony Blair's New Labour Party, also responsible for more deaths than the IRA recently). But who on earth do the Americans think they are, to arrogate to themselves the right to ostracise politicians they don't like from other countries.

I would refer that great Bible-reader, the self-styled born-again George W Bush, to the Gospel of St Matthew, chapter 7, verse 3: 'Why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own'. It might do Tony Blair no harm to read it either.
