Truth behind one of our pet topics.

Byline: Paul Routledge

IS Britain a nation of animal lovers or of hypocrites?

In five years, 1.6 million pets were put down by owners who didn't want them and the trend is rising.

This year, 320,000 cats and dogs will get a lethal injection because owners can't afford them. When credit crunches, the animals suffer first.

Owners are most likely to get rid of pets in East Anglia and least likely in Lancs.

I never had the Red Rose county down as soppy about animals - except, of course, Premier League footballers.
