Trust's crucial backing.

THE IET funding for the Hollis memorial is part of the Landfill Community cash for community projects scheme, administered by the Government.

Locally on Teesside, the IET funding is the crucial part of the jigsaw for the Hollis commemoration.

Peter Baker, chairman of the Impetus Environmental Trust, said: "The trust feels the Hollis memorial is an excellent project that not only acknowledges one of its characters, but also commemorates local history and will encourage visitors to our region to pay their respects at the memorial. "To date, the trust has donated more than PS3.5m of Landfill Community monies to community projects across the Teesside and Hartlepool areas.

"Anyone with a project that needs funding can contact Nicky Graves on 01642 673313, or email for an application form to

com." Nicky Graves, trust administrator who has worked closely with Brian Bage, said: "I'm looking forward to seeing the project brought to fruition."

Middlesbrough Mayor Ray Mallon said: "Stanley Hollis VC is a household name in this area due to his heroism on D-Day, and a memorial of this kind will be a fitting tribute to such a courageous man.

"Brian Bage has worked extremely hard for a long period of time in co-ordinating the project and I believe the memorial will be a wonderful addition to the Cenotaph and Albert Park location."
