Truckload of scrap catches fire on highway.

A TRUCKLOAD of workshop scrap caught fire yesterday while it was being transported from Sehla to Sitra.

The incident took place at around 11am when a large dump truck was making its way on the Al Estiqlal Highway near the GDN offices.

The truck driver said he felt intense heat in the cabin and looked back to see his load was on fire.

He said he immediately drove to a vacant area on the side of the highway and dumped the burning consignment.

Civil Defence teams rushed to the scene and put out the fire within minutes.

An officer at the scene said the load consisted of used car spare parts and empty oil and grease drums.

He said workers had been using oxy-acetylene cutters while loading the truck.

"Some spark possibly remained ignited as the truck started its journey and as a result of the wind, it spread," said the officer.

"The driver showed considerable presence of mind as he dumped the burning load."
