Byline: Fred Crafts The Register-Guard

Trombonist Michael Davis, who has performed with artists as diverse as Frank Sinatra and the Rolling Stones, will be the guest soloist with the Eugene big band Swing Shift at its concert Nov. 21.

Davis is a first-call trombonist who has performed on three Rolling Stones tours. Prior to that, he spent six years as lead trombonist for Frank Sinatra.

In addition, his extensive credits include gigs with Paul Simon, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Sting, Branford Marsalis, Harry Connick Jr., Aerosmith, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow and Sarah Vaughan.

Davis has recorded extensively for film and television, and is a multiple recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Commission Project.

A native of San Francisco, Davis received his musical training at the Eastman School of Music. He began his professional career with a two-year tenure on the Buddy Rich Band before moving to New York City.

Davis has recorded six solo albums: "Brass Nation," "Bonetown," "Absolute Trombone," "Midnight Crossing," "Heroes" and "Sidewalk Cafe." A new CD - featuring trumpeters Chuck Findley, Bobby Shew, Randy Brecker, Phil Smith and Chris Botti - will be released soon.

"Davis is truly a remarkable musician,' Swing Shift leader Jim Olsen says, `and we are thrilled to be able to perform with him."

Also on the program will be the South Eugene High School Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Ron Black.

Davis will give a free clinic at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 21 at South Eugene High School. In addition, he will perform with Swing Shift at 8 p.m. Nov. 22 at the Florence Events Center, 715 Quince St., Florence.

Swing Shift with Michael Davis will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at the South Eugene High School auditorium, 400 E. 19th Ave. Tickets, at $10 for general admission and $8 for students, are available through Cat's Meow Jazz & Blues, 686-8742; Pacific Winds Music, 343-5660; or Light's Music Center, 686-4270.
