Trio put their faith in Czech mate Lola; View from the Bridges.

ACCOUNTANT Helen Blades and her friends are about to show you don't need the smartest wheels in town to win a rally.

The trio, also known as the Buston Wildcats, are preparing to tackle a 1,500-mile race across the Alps in a 15-year-old Skoda.

Helen, of Newcastle's unw Chartered Accountants, and pals Natalie Barber of GB Building Solutions and Helen McMonagle, a PhD psychology student, are taking part in the Czech Wrecks Banger Car Rally on Friday.

The rules of the race stipulate that the vehicle must be M registration or older and initially cost no more than pounds 100 and the Wildcats are confident that their Skoda Favorit, called Lola, will do them proud.

The journey will take the women through some fabulous scenery in the Alps and one of their most daunting experiences will be going over the infamous Passo del Stelvio, probably the highest mountain pass in Europe.

Helen said: "We have given Lola a thorough going-over, lovingly painted and decorated her while dodging the rain so she looks beautiful and every bit a winner.

"It's now pay-back time for her to rise to the challenge and get us to Prague safely.

"We want to raise as much money as we can for the Great North Air Ambulance because it provides a fantastic service to such a large area of the North of England yet receives no Government funding."

They are hoping to raise cash for the Great North Air Ambulance Service with their epic trip which will see them join around 70 other ageing motors to set off from Calais and make their way through France, Switzerland, Italy and Austria before finally ending up in Prague four days later, if the Skoda's engines hold out.
