Trimethoprim plant of Wellcome Pakistan.

The formal commencement of operations at Wellcome's Trimethoprim plant held recently in Karachi. The Governor of Sindh Mr. Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr. M.S. Habib, Chairman and Management Director of Wellcome Pakistan Ltd. in his address of welcome apprised the audience of the significance of this plant for the country's economy.

"The establishment of basic manufacturing plant to produce Trimethoprim, a vital ingredient used in production of antibiotic preparations under the brand name of Septran, is yet another milestone added to a long list of achievements in which the Wellcome Group and Pakistan Company can take some legitimate pride". He said. He pointed out. "It reflects the trust and abiding faith which our company has in the democratically elected government of Pakistan where potential exists for future economic growth. With the implementation of this project, we expect to save foreign exchange to the extent of Rs. 40 million annually for our country. Furthermore, fresh avenues of employment will open up for young and qualified people and, above all, it will help in transfer of sophisticated technology to Pakistan."

"We know that the government of Pakistan is keen in attracting foreign private investment. Hence Wellcome having faith in Pakistan has decided to invest for company's expansion projects totalling Rs. 300 million, of which Rs. 70 million have already been spent on the establishment of Trimethoprim plant. We expect to spend Rs. 60 million on providing additional stores, warehouse and office facilities and the balance amount of Rs. 170 million will be spent on setting up a brand new sterile area for injectables etc. with most modern good manufacturing practice. These projects would be completed in the next 2-3 years time". He said.

The Governor of Sindh Mr. Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim made a spirited speech highlighting the law and order situation of Sindh. He has also lauded the services rendered by Wellcome Pakistan in the field of medicines. At the conclusion of the programme the Governor of Sindh was presented a shield.
