Trimble on Cam-paign trail.

Byline: MURPHY

PUNDITS are predicting a swift return to the headlines for former Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble if British PM Gordon Brown opts for a snap general election this autumn.

The former First Minister up north joined David Cameron's Conservative Party last year. And word from the Tory conference in Blackpool is that the joint Nobel Peace Prize winner remains a cert for a top job with them.

Many had predicted Trimble would immediately be appointed to a role alongside Cameron. But he elected to take his time and learn the ropes.

And who could blame him? Last time around he historically led unionists into power-sharing with Sinn Fein... only to see the rival DUP steal his clothes, gobble up his party's power base and swipe his seat.

Forget "Not for turning", this unionist is clearly learning.
