Trimble GPS/AVL System On-line for APEC Summit; Company Plays Role in Subic Bay CyberCity Project

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) announced today that the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) is now on- line with its GPS-based Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) Subsystem for the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. As a technology partner and major system provider for the CyberCity IT infrastructure project, Trimble and its system integrator Asian Navigation and Tracking Systems (ANTS) has equipped 50 police, fire and ambulance vehicles with its GPS-based tracking system to locate, manage and dispatch for enhanced fleet operations, security and emergency response.

"President Clinton has recognized GPS as an integral component of the emerging Global Information Infrastructure by offering the technology to the world," said Norman Byer, President of Telos International Corporation. "We are extremely pleased to be working with Trimble, the world leader in GPS solutions, as a technology partner for the CyberCity project."

The first phase of the CyberCity project was unveiled at the APEC Summit. The summit addresses regional economic concerns and is attended by eighteen heads of state from ASEAN and/or Pacific Rim economies including: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and the United States.

"The APEC summit is the ideal forum to showcase the first phase of CyberCity," said Charles R. Trimble, President and CEO of Trimble. "The Subic Bay project is a cutting edge infrastructure model for economies that seek to promote economic growth through information technology integration. More importantly, CyberCity is a meaningful legacy for the people of the Phillipines to enhance the quality of life."

The Subic Bay CyberCity Project

The SBMA was established in 1992 and charged with developing the Subic Bay Freeport Zone into a self-sustaining industrial, commercial and financial investment, and tourist center. The futuristic CyberCity project is the brainchild of SBMA Chairman Richard Gordon who envisioned a completely integrated environment that will serve technology needs of residents, business enterprises and other organizations.

Telos Corporation, headquartered in Ashburn, Virginia, is in charge of integrating all CyberCity IT systems from design and development to implementation of critical services for security, emergency response, voice/data communications, financial control, tourism and education. With a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, the Subic Bay Freeport Zone can compete in the global marketplace and attract and retain international companies such as Federal Express, Acer, Hitachi and Thomson Consumer Electronics thus creating thousands of job opportunities.

Since the project began in June 1996, Telos and its technology partners have installed an IT infrastructure and various applications including: a freeport economic zone identification card system, an initial 911 emergency response capability, a GPS-based vehicle tracking system, information systems and e-mail for SBMA, information technology training centers, and web pages for SBMA. The new IT infrastructure is network-based that enables local area, wide area and internet connectivity through high performance fiberoptic cabling. In addition, work has begun on a financial control system for SBMA, a Geographic Information System (GIS), and a merchandise control system.

Trimble's GPS/AVL Subsystem

Trimble's GPS/AVL Subsystem is one of the most responsive tools for achieving maximum fleet efficiency. It is a comprehensive system of fully integrated products, including a PSC-20O(TM) intelligent data controller with a built-in GPS receiver, an EchoXL(TM) message data terminal, and base station software packages for AVL management and communications control. These products work together to track vehicles or report vehicle/crew status. Trimble's GPS/AVL Subsystem provides up to five reports per second so the dispatcher can receive continuous feedback from the fleet. This information can be integrated with an existing CAD resource or used for display on an electronic map. For map display, Trimble uses its own StarView(TM) real-time map display application software that graphically indicates vehicle location and status against a backdrop of scaleable maps. Trimble also offers Geographical Information System (GIS) tools and services for making CAD geofiles and custom map databases AVL ready.

Trimble has extensive experience providing complex GPS-based tracking systems for customers with both small and large operations. These customers include the police and fire departments, ambulance services, army proving grounds, courier services, towing companies, public transportation systems and taxi services.
