Trilogy Receives Patent for the Company's Transparent Backtracking Technology.
AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 9, 2001
Latest Patent Results in Breakthrough for Backtracking, the First Solution of Its Kind Developed for General Purpose Computer Languages
Trilogy, a leading provider of e-business solutions for the Global 2000, today announced the issuance of a U.S. patent (No. 6,157,922) for the company's transparent Backtracking technology. The patent was officially issued to Trilogy on Dec. 5, 2000. Recent patents include one issued to Trilogy for its Flash Configuration Cache on Sept. 5, 2000 and one received by the company on Dec. 14, 1999 for its Method and Apparatus for Configuration Systems.
The patent relates to backtracking-based searching. Backtracking-based searching is a mechanism for solving complex problems having many potential alternative solutions. Rather than analyzing all possible alternatives prior to choosing a solution, a system using backtracking generally investigates one alternative at a time until an acceptable solution is found.
Invented by Trilogy software developer, Paul Vaughan, Trilogy's Backtracking technology, the first of its kind, enables software modelers working with general purpose computer languages, such as C++ and Java, to write object oriented configuration solutions intuitively without imposing control flow limitations on the search program. For example, creating a working computer system requires the ability to search for a series of components and a way to install them so that everything operates together in order to meet a set of criteria. With Trilogy's transparent Backtracking technology, software modelers don't have to be concerned with programming a system to backtrack -- it happens automatically.
"Many companies have tried to implement solutions, such as configuration solutions, in C or C++ without this technology and failed due to the complexity of writing and maintaining special purpose programs," said Chris Hyams, vice president of development at Trilogy. "Since Trilogy's Backtracking technology makes it easy to carry out complex configurations on the Web by automating the entire backtracking process, it is of critical importance to large companies selling complex products through multiple sales channels. Our new, patented technology for backtracking is further proof of Trilogy's commitment to developing the most effective configuration tools on the market today."
