Tried & Tested: Custard tarts.

Pop on the kettle and then kick back with a tasty custard tart. We

taste test three of the

supermarket brands...

Tesco 4 Custard Tarts

99p per pack Per tart: 213 calories, 10.3g fat

Per 100g: 260 calories, 12.5g fat

Our tester loved the light and fluffy consistency of this tart. The pastry was really tasty and a good texture. The tart wasn't too sweet and sickly, but our tester was sorry that the cinnamon

topping had a rather bland taste.

Sainsbury's 4 Egg Custard Tarts

pounds 1.98 per pack Per tart: 230 calories, 11.9g fat

Per 100g: 270 calories, 14.1g fat

This tart was disappointing. Pastry was too thick and heavy and masked the filling. The egg custard didn't melt on the tongue and the only flavour tasted was the nutmeg. Our tester also thought the tart was far too deep in shape.

Morrisons 4 Egg Custard Tarts

59p per pack Per tart: 225 calories, 4.5g fat

Per 100g: 268 calories, 5.4g fat

This was a tasty one and our tester liked the delicious eggy filling with a strong, but not overpowering, seasoning of nutmeg. The pastry was nice and not too heavy, but there was too much of it in the base and it was too deep for a tart.
