Byline: Sophie Blakemore Health Correspondent

A former Birmingham health boss has been killed in a motorway car crash.

Geoff Scaife died after the accident on the M4 between Chippenham and Bath on Tuesday night.

Mr Scaife, who lived in Worcester, was chief executive of the former Birmingham Health Authority from October 2000 to January 2002.

He continued in the role for a year after BHA became the Birmingham and the Black Country Strategic Health Authority.

His achievements included forming the Birmingham Cancer Network, serving 2.5 million people, and establishing the Workforce Development Confederation.

The 55-year-old left Birmingham to become chief executive of Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire Strategic Health Authority in January 2003, a position he held at the time of his death.

He leaves a widow, Janet, and their four children.

Sir Nigel Crisp, chief executive of the NHS, paid tribute to Mr Scaife as a 'great man and a great leader'.

'His personal qualities, his depth of experience and his wisdom meant that he made an enormous contribution to the whole of the NHS. We will miss him,' he said.

Elisabeth Buggins, chairwoman of the BBC SHA, said: 'Widely respected, he also earned sincere affection from many who worked with him.'

Anthea Millett, chairwoman of Avon, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire SHA added: 'We are all deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic news about Geoff.'
