Tributes paid to 'champion for rugby in Malta'.

A PROUD West Walian who became an unlikely "champion" for rugby in Malta has died at the age of 86.

Tributes have flooded in from the southern European island nation after Elfed Williams passed away earlier this month.

The Aberystwyth born and bred sports fanatic was a regular visitor to the country and became ingrained in Maltese society, contributing in particular to the Maltese Rugby Football Union (MRFU). As a founding member of the MRFU Disciplinary Committee, Elfed helped modernise and improve the game in Malta and arranged many visits by touring clubs from Wales.

Away from rugby he organised the country's first International Choir Festival and revived the Welsh Maltese Society.

Kevin Buttigieg, former president of the MRFU, said: "It is a huge loss for the rugby world to have a man like Elfed pass away.

"Elfed was a huge help at the infancy of the Malta Rugby Football union. He played an important roll in the set up at the beginning and will never be forgotten."
