Tremor measuring 4.2 on Richter scale shakes Delhi, NCR.
The tremors which lasted less than five seconds, sent across scores of local residents to hop out of their beds and run for safety.
As per the Indian Metrological department, Sonepat district in the northern state of Haryana was the epicentre of the earthquake.
A terrified resident, Rajesh Kumar said they had been standing on the streets for past half an hour, apprehending the worst of worse situations.
"We had just slept when the earthquake had struck. We woke up from sleep and realized that our bed was shaking badly. We were terrified and we have been standing downstairs for the past half an hour. All people from our colony have come down," he said.
Meanwhile, Vishnu Gangaram, an elderly person said he had never experienced such jolts in his entire life and expressed his gratitude to God, as no untoward incidence had occurred.
"For the first time in my life I have ever experienced this kind of earthquake. I was so terrified that I had to jump off from last two stairs while running with my baby grandchild in my arms. It was good that I brought kid along with me. Truly, we all are indebted to God," said Vishnu Gangaram, another resident of federal government quarters complex on Baba Kharak Singh Marg.
No casualties have been reported so far but the earthquake could have been fatal and dangerous if it had lasted for longer time.
Tremors were also experienced in surrounding areas of New Delhi such as Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad. (ANI)
