Travelers Group Selects New Advertising Agency.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 24, 1997--Travelers Group (NYSE:TRV) announced today that it has selected New York-based Merkley Newman Harty as its advertising agency of record, to handle creative development and media placement for the company's new advertising campaign. The size of the campaign was not disclosed.

Merkley Newman Harty, a division of Omnicom, will have responsibility for Travelers Group's corporate image advertising, and trade advertising for Travelers Life & Annuity and Travelers Property Casualty Corp. -- two of Travelers Group's insurance subsidiaries. Advertising for the company's Salomon Smith Barney unit will continue to be handled by McCann-Erickson.

Commenting on the agency selection, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Sanford I. Weill said, "Travelers Group is a very different company than it was five years ago. Yet our well-known red umbrella continues to be associated primarily with our role as a leading domestic insurer, rather than as a global, fully integrated financial services provider."

Weill added, "We believe Merkley Newman Harty can help us design an advertising strategy that cuts through the insurance industry clutter, and also enables people to understand and appreciate the full scope and capabilities of Travelers Group. Travelers Group is one of the nation's largest diversified financial services companies, with approximately $170 billion in assets. Its operating companies include Smith Barney, Travelers Life & Annuity, Primerica Financial Services, Travelers Property Casualty and Commercial Credit. Following completion of its announced acquisition of Salomon Inc, on a pro forma basis Travelers Group is expected have assets totaling more than $350 billion.
