Byline: VICKY LISSAMAN

WHAT: Hotel ibis Bristol Centre. Double rooms from PS86 a night. accorhotels.com, 0117 319 9000 WHERE: On Explore Lane, overlooking Bristol's vibrant Millennium Square and opposite We The Curious science and arts centre with its huge, shiny planetarium.

EXPERIENCE: Smiling reception staff in distinctive red T-shirts greeted us and swiftly checked us in via smartphone. All we had to do was give our names, so rifling in bags or scrolling through phones for booking reference numbers was not necessary.

We were given two swipe cards to access our double rooms and took the lift, two floors up.

For a budget hotel, the room was pretty spacious. There was a TV with plenty of channels, a desk where the kettle, complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits were placed, a seating area and hanging space with bathrobes.

The laminate flooring is obviously there to enable staff to easily keep things clean, and the complimentary slippers meant we didn't have to walk on it barefoot.

The space-age bathroom pod was brightly lit with a walk-in shower, complimentary dental kit, shower gel and hand soap.

For breakfast there was a good selection of cereals, pastries, fruit, cold meats and cheeses, as well as a self-serve full English.

For those with more contemporary tastes there was a range of dips including different flavoured hummus and guacamole. We helped ourselves to the tea and fancy coffees from the machines.

There was also a funky bar, with table football, and outdoor seating overlooking the square.

We parked overnight in the nearby Britannia car park, which only cost us PS8 as the hotel pays PS10 towards guests' parking. QUIBBLES: We had difficulty using one of the swipe cards for the room, but the other was fine. VERDICT: A trendy, budget hotel with a breezy, modern vibe in a brilliant location for sightseeing and nights out in Bristol. 9/10
