Travel: GIVE YOUR VAN PERFECT COVER; Setting off on your summer holiday? Caravan expert STEVE BROWN says it's better to be safe than sorry.

CARAVANNING is continuing to grow rapidly in popularity for summer holidays and short breaks, both in the UK and abroad.

But what if the worst happens and you have an accident? Are you properly covered when it comes to insurance?

Unlike your car, it's not a legal requirement to insure your caravan so budget-conscious buyers often give it a miss.

That could be a false economy. Insurance is highly recommended and will ensure peace of mind in the long term.

After your home, a caravan is often the most expensive purchase you're likely to make, so it's surprising that it up to 25 per cent of caravans in the UK are believed to be uninsured.

Covering your caravan isn't expensive and, given that for many people it's now their main source of holidays and short breaks, it's something no caravanner should be without.

Here are my top 10 tips: 1Your caravan is covered by your motor vehicle insurance only as long as it is attached to your car. You can claim for damage caused to it, or by the caravan to anyone or anything else -but it could cost you your no-claims bonus.

2Your home insurance policy may or may not cover the contents of your caravan so check with your insurer. If your caravan itself is damaged while at home, it will almost certainly not be covered by your home contents insurance.

3If you buy a caravan on finance, you will be required to have insurance for the duration of the finance deal.

4A proper caravan insurance policy can cost as little as around pounds 100 a year and will cover your caravan, awning and contents against fire, theft, vandalism, accidents, weather or any other damage both in the UK and abroad.

5A specialist caravan insurer is the best bet because they have a better understanding of the needs of caravanners. As a result their policies are better tailored to caravan owners.

6Caravan insurance costs are not generally dictated by postcode but by the age and value of the caravan.

7If you're intending to take your caravan abroad, check that your policy doesn't place a limit on the number of days it's used outside the UK.

8Many specialist caravan insurers will offer discounts depending on where the caravan is stored, if alarms or other anti-theft devices are fitted, and if the owner is above a certain age. 9Opting for a larger excess will bring the cost down as, of course, will a no-claims bonus.

10 Membership of caravan clubs may also entitle you to a discount from a specialist insurer.

As with all other types of insurance, be sure to shop around to get the best deal available.
