Transport and Communications Ministry Organizes International Seminar.

Muscat, Jan 27 (ONA) ---- The Ministry of Transport and Communications organized a seminar at City Seasons Hotel today on ' Developing a Strategy for Trade and Transport Facilitation System ' under the patronage of Said bin Hamdoon al-Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Ports and Maritime Affairs. While delivering the keynote speech, Said bin Hamdoon al- Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Ports and Maritime Affairs, said that we have to reconsider modes of facilitating trade, especially the Sultanate has agreement with landlocked countries. The Sultanate has also signed Ashgabat Agreement on Establishment of the International Transport and Transit Corridor which aim at facilitating trade.

The speakers highlighted the current developments in the maritime , land and air Port Community Systems. They also covered the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of trade and transport facilitation strategy. The seminar also touched on a number of points, such as how to develop the systems and activate trade, the transport society, change management when applying the new systems, preparing a strong legal and governmental framework for facilitation of trade, transport and logistics, establishing a strong system for facilitation of transport and trade that focus on meeting the needs of the business community and link the investment systems at the public and private sectors as well. The seminar included a presentation on the trade facilitation system in Singapore, the challenges and opportunities in the EU Port System, Dubai experience in ports and trade facilitation system in Asia and Europe. It also included displayed a number of case studies on facilitation of trade in Estonia, Finland, Port of Sohar and Salalah Port.

The seminar aims at reviewing the experiences of a number of countries in the establishment and operation of trade facilitation and port community systems to facilitate international trade. It also aimed at opening discussions to understand the Sultanate's ability to develop a strategy for trade and transport facilitation that can be in line with the challenges and opportunities in the Sultanate. --- Ends/MS/FS
