Transgender person forced to live on street after diagnosed with HIV positive.

PESHAWAR -- A transgender person, who was diagnosed with HIV positive in Lady Reading Hospital, is forced to live on a street in Peshawar.

According to Trans Action Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the LRH referred the patient to Hayatabad Medical Complex after she was diagnosed with the disease.

However, it said that the patient was not provided any assistance and that she was abandoned by all care providers.

The transgender person, identified as Dewani, is currently living on the road near garbage dump in Dallazak area.

Trans Action KP, which aimed at supporting gender identity and gender reassignment equality, said that the most of the transgender people living with HIV/Aids are without any treatment.

'Health department and UNAIDS have to engage transgender community to put an end to stigma and abuse related to access of HIV treatment,' it said.

Transgender community is one of the most persecuted and marginalized sections of the society in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where there has been an increase in incidents of violence.

On May 2016, a transgender activist Alesha died as she failed to get urgent medical aid after being shot in Peshawar.

Alesha was the Peshawar district coordinator at Trans Action Alliance Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Following the attack, Alesha was rushed to Lady Reading Hospital. However, the hospital authorities could not decide where to place her, thereby delaying the urgent medical care she needed.

The matter came under the notice of Khyber Pakhtunkha Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser, who visited Alesha at the hospital and directed the hospital authorities to place her in a private room. However, Alesha's condition continued to deteriorate, killing her eventually.
