Trail with a tale to tell.
Now an effort is underway to better understand changes along the trail and use that information to help people understand environmental changes. The monitoring effort is being undertaken by a diversity of citizen groups, among them the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and the American Hiking Society, and supported by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Cornell University, the National Geographic Society, and Aveda Corporation.
Trail hikers should be able to volunteer to help with this monitoring program within the next year.
