Traditional basketry begins to vanish.

MERSyN (CyHAN)- Basketry, a traditional source of income using straw, cane or corn stalk in Turkey falls into oblivion with plastic and more economic baskets in the southern province of Mersin's Silifke district.

With development of transportation sector and mass production, traditional baskets draw less interest which affects production of them directly. Durdu Karaca and GE-lE-en Karaca who earn their livelihood by making baskets with straw and canes stated that the baskets were in high demand in the past both in bazaars and in storerooms of homes. Basketry is not a stable source of income anymore with the introduction of plastic ones and deficiency in straw, cane ad corn stalk, said Durdu Karaca.
