Towards a New Era in Arts Education.

Charting a New Era in Arts Education

"American schools, K-12, should provide arts education for all students every day." That bold statement forms the cornerstone of the Interlochen Proposal -- thirty-two far-reaching recommendations which chart the future for arts education. These sweeping recommendations, published by ACA Books in Toward a New Era in Arts Education: The Interlochen symposium, were the culmination of three intensive days of unprecedented debate and discussion by 150 leaders from the arts, education and government. This landmark invitational symposium was held at the Interlochen Arts Academy in November 1987.

Twelve leaders from the arts and from education were commissioned to co-author six papers which served as the focus of the symposium and of the book. New ideas are advanced on such key issues as: . Assessing the role, content and purpose of arts curricula in the schools. . Adopting strategies for advocacy and action. . Promoting partnerships for arts education among organizations, agencies and institutions. . Promoting partnerships among teachers, artists and scholars. . Developing professionals for art education. . Planning long-term improvements, . Exploring the role of the artist.

This book is a useful resource to administrators, curriculum developers and teachers who are interested in the interdisciplinary needs of the arts in American schools.

Toward a New Era in Arts Education is available in paperback for $12.95, plus $3 shipping/handling, from: ACA Books, American Council for the Arts, 1285 Avenue of the Americas, 3rd Floor, New York, NY, 10019. For more information, please contact Amy Jennings at (212) 245-4510.
