Touts help cops seize pounds 3m assets; CRIME.

TIP-OFFS from informers and other sources have helped police seize more than pounds 3million in criminal assets in less than a year, it was revealed yesterday.

Substantial hauls of drugs, stolen cars and cash have been recovered and more than 600 suspects arrested in the past eight months.

Assistant Chief Constable Drew Harris said: "At a local level we are getting a lot of information and we are turning that into results.

"These are all about local criminals who are a blight on the local society."

ACC Harris added informers - now referred to by police as Covert Human Intelligence Sources - may be paid.

But he insisted: "There are no criminals being protected because they are providing information, be it as the old expression as a tout or now as a CHIS."
