Tourists rescued after cliff drama.

FOUR Amercian tourists were involved in a dramatic cliff rescue last night.

The air and sea operation was launched when the Coastguard recieved a 999 call from a distressed woman.

The tourist and three friends were lost in the fields below Northern Ireland's highest cliffs at Fair Head, Co Antrim.

As darkness fell the women began to get alarmed and, although they had a mobile phone they were unable to get a signal because they were so close to the cliffs.

It was several hours before they were able to call 999 and report themsleves stranded.

Because it was dark, Belfast Coastguard immediately requested a Sea King rescue helicopter which was scrambled from HMS Gannet at Prestwick.

The coastguard also launched the local Red Bay lifeboat to keep watch as the women were winched on board the chopper after the rescue flight across the Irish Sea.

They were eventually landed at Ballycastle Golf Club where members of a coastguard cliff rescue team were positioned.

The women were a little shaken after their rdeal but none were injured in the incident.
