Tough regime needed; Mailbag letters also appear online at www.examiner.co.uk/letters Mailbag.

I'M writing with reference to Secretary of State for Justice Chris Grayling announcing 'Borstal Plans for Young Offenders.' I totally agree that rehabilitation in the communities does not work and hasn't since its conception - ask anyone on the street. It's only our MPs that have been unable to see it.

Police must be tired of continually arresting re-offenders. They put them before the courts after many offences and still they get community orders, or fines that take years to pay off.

It's madness and totally stupid and a total waste of money by this Conservative Government. What we will be moving back to is the old Approved School and Borstal systems and if run correctly they could certainly work.

A tough regime with military physical training, log races, runs etc. Teach the young offenders First Aid, numeracy and literally skills as many would have dropped out of school.

They have to earn any rewards such as television, radios etc in their cells.

Once they have shown they have adapted to the regime and want to learn, they can then start to learn vocational training such as metal work, wood work, even mechanical engineering.
