Touching the lives of 500,000 families.

Those with autism are not physically disabled and look as though they don't even have a disability.

Because it is an "invisible" condition, it can be much harder to create awareness and understanding of the condition.

Yet autistic spectrum disorders are estimated to touch the lives of more than 500,000 families throughout the UK.

* According to the Sensory Integration Network, sensory experiences include touch, movement, body position, vision, smell, taste, sound and the pull of gravity.

The process of the brain organising and interpreting this information is called sensory integration.

When the process is disordered a number of problems in learning, motor skills and behaviour may be evident.

* When a child has delayed achievement of one or more developmental milestones, this is developmental delay. Global developmental delay implies that the child has delays in all areas of development.
