Touch of a button change.

Crack the code of motoring jargon from A to Z with our weekly bluffer's guide... The oxidising catalytic converter for diesel vehicles reduces the levels of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons in the exhaust and also lowers soot emissions known as particulates.

Unlike the closed-loop, three-way catalytic converter for spark-ignition engines it cannot convert oxides of nitrogen into environmentally more compatible nitrogen.

This is because it is a chemical reduction process, which is the opposite of the oxidation process here.

For this reason, diesel engines are equipped with exhaust gas recirculation that takes place during the combustion process to reduce the amount of oxides of nitrogen.

ONE touch memory is an electronic system that memorises and stores individual seat settings. This is particularly useful when up to four people of varying heights and sizes are regularly driving the same vehicle. It enables them to achieve their preferred driving position at the single touch of a button.

More sophisticated systems can recognise the driver by their fingerprint. Once the system has positively matched the fingerprint recorded with a stored print, the seats, mirrors and steering column are adjusted in line.
