Toshiba tops in notebooks: analysts.

NEW YORK -- A market research firm has placed Toshiba America Information Systems at the head of the class for retail sales of its top-selling notebooks, Satellite and Satellite Pro.

Data released this month by Audits and Surveys Worldwide gave Toshiba's Computer Systems Division a 35.4 percent share of the retail market for August 1997. Toshiba has held the top spot from September 1996 through August 1997, according to Audits and Surveys.

"Toshiba's excellent reputation and ability to target their customers with a range of portables make them the number one portable in retail and computer superstores," said Carl Ravitch, executive vice president of Audits and Surveys Worldwide.

Walter Miao, analyst with Access Media International, said Toshiba's wide range of products, from the low to high ends of the retail pricing spectrum, helps keep the firm on top.
