Tory threat to crime compo whistleblower.

Tory justice minister Helen Grant has been accused of issuing a "heavy-handed threat" to a whistleblower civil servant.

The worker was warned they could face disciplinary action for writing to Labour MP Tom Greatrex and criticising UK government plans to slash compensation for crime victims.

Greatrex will report the minister to the Commons Speaker for warning his constituent that they could be breaching the Civil Service Code by speaking out against the plans.

Greatrex, MP for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, said: "This is an outrageously heavy-handed threat to hard-working public sector staff."

The government want to cut funding for the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme by more than PS50million a year.

Grant said: "I am genuinely sorry if this caused any offence."
