The US National Weather Service confirmed at least two separate "large and extremely dangerous" tornadoes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area alone on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, several other developing twisters were reported as a number of violent storm fronts moved north through the Houston metropolitan area.

There was no immediate update on any casualties.

In Lancaster, south of Dallas, local television footage showed homes without roofs while other buildings were flattened.

A spokesman for Dallas Fort Worth Airport told local reporters that staff had pulled passengers away from glass windows and into the interior of the airport as the storms moved through.

A spokeswoman for Arlington Independent School District, in between Dallas and Fort Worth, said all schools there had asked students to take shelter, and reported several schools had suffered power outages.

The weather service said "considerable damage" was also reported in rural Johnson County, south of Fort Worth.
