Toray, Maruho to co-develop atopic drugs to treat itching.

TOKYO, March 31 Kyodo

Major textile maker Toray Industries Inc. said Thursday that it will develop and market with Maruho Co. a drug for treating itching in atopic dermatitis patients.

Toray said its pharmaceutical research laboratory discovered TRK-820, an opioid receptor agonist, and that it will jointly develop the drug with Osaka-based Maruho, which will be in charge of marketing.

The two firms are currently preparing for joint clinical trials of the compound.

The new drug differs from existing antipruritic drugs, such as antihistamine, owing to its novel mechanism in treating itching, Toray said. Steroid ointments are effective in controlling inflammation but not effective in suppressing itching, it added.
