Top pros to take on Burgham; OPEN COMPETITION DIARY.

BURGHAM Park in Northumberland is to host the North Region PGA Championship again this month.

The three-day tournament will be played on the championship course at Burgham, which was such a great hit with the region's top professionals last year.

Operations Director Terry Minett said: "Hosting a tournament of this stature, although it demonstrates the undoubted quality of the course, is hard work for the staff and green keepers.

"However, the tremendous praise and positive comments about the course and facilities at the club from both the professionals and PGA officials last year encouraged us to host the event again.

"The last day of the tournament this year will be Saturday, September 29th and we hope that the local golfing fraternity will be out in force to see the region's top pros take on the challenge of Burgham."

Last year's competition ended in dramatic fashion when European Tour winner and BBC golf pundit Paul Eales was pipped at the post by an eagle, birdie, birdie finish by Chorley professional Mark Bradley.

Bradley finished the 54 holes on 10 under, followed by Eales on - 8, MikeArcher on -5 and David Clark and Simon Edwards on -4.

The North Region PGA Championship is the fourth and final event in the region's order of merit and is always guaranteed a top class field.

The first two players in the order of merit qualify to play in the PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Some 144 pros including North East favourites David Clark, Mike Nesbitt, Mike Archer, John Harrison, Andrew Paisley, Martin Jackson and last year's winner Mark Bradley and order of merit winner Simon Edwards, will be teeing it up on September 27th.

The 54-hole event will be preceded on September 26 by a charity pro-am sponsored by local company Automatic Retailing.

WINNER: 2006 champion Mark Bradley receives the trophy from Burgham Park co-owner William Kiely.; ALMOST THERE: Morpeth's David Clark attempts a long put on his way to a close run at the title at Burgham last year.
