Top for the 'phonics?'.

THE Stereophonics are hoping to notch up the biggest hit of their career with a cover of an old Rod Stewart song.

Handbags and Gladrags is currently the third best-selling single of the week, outselling new releases by Steps and Michael Jackson.

"It would be nice to be No 1, but we'd be pleased to be in the top three, " said drummer Stuart Cable, whose biggest hit has been The Bartender and the Thief, which made the top three in 1998.

The song, which was written by Mike D'Abo of Manfred Mann, was made popular by Rod Stewart on his first album.

It's a change of style for the Cwmaman rock band with backing by Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra.

"It would be nice to be number one for Christmas, but I'm not holding my breath, " said Cable.
