Top climber falls off own roof; Mountain man Martin stuck in a wheelchair.

A top climber who conquered some of the world's most dangerous peaks fell from the roof of his own home.

Martin Moran, 44, plunged 30 feet while fixing slates and broke his wrist, elbow, pelvis and ribs.

Yesterday, embarrassed Martin, one of Britain's best mountaineers, refused to talk about his fall.

But his relieved wife, Joy, reckoned his skills saved him from worse injury. She said: "He told me that while he was falling he was thinking about the best way to land to minimise injury."

Casey Gordon, secretary of the British Mountain Guides Association, said: "He is a very well- respected climber.

"It is a bit ironic that he fell from a house roof after all of his achievements."

Martin came to grief at his house in Lochcarron, Wester Ross.

One local, who did not want to be named, said: "We all feel very sorry for him but there has been the odd chuckle."

Martin has scaled treacherous mountains from the Alps to the Himalayas.

He also became the first person to climb all of Scotland's Munros during a single winter.

After the roof fall, he spent two weeks in an orthopaedic unit at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness but was released yesterday to recover at home.

He is having to use a wheelchair to get around and wife Joy added: "It will take some time for him to fully recover.

"I am just so glad that he is home safe and alive."

Martin gave up an accountancy career for climbing and is a professional mountaineering instructor.

He is also a member of the internationally-respected British Mountain Guides Association.
