Top chefs team up with Durham Cathedral for an eighteenth century feast, with a modern twist; An authentic Georgian three-course dinner will be served up in the medieval Undercroft Restaurant in the World Heritage Site.

Durham Cathedral is teaming up with gourmet chef Anton Edelmann and Master Sommelier Gerard Basset to offer guests a taste of history this summer.

An authentic Georgian three-course dinner will be served in the magnificent medieval Undercroft Restaurant at Durham Cathedral on July 23.

Inspired by John Thacker's Art of Cookery (1758), from the Collections of Durham Cathedral, each course will offer a range of culinary delights to tantalise the tastebuds.

The evening will begin at 6.30pm, when guests will be served a selection of canapes before sampling a selection of eighteenth-century recipes with a contemporary twist. A range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian options will also be available to suit all tastes and each course will be accompanied by a glass of wine.

Throughout the evening, guests will be attended to by Anton Edelmann, executive chef and The Savoy Hotel's Maitre Chef des Cuisines for over 20 years, and Gerard Basset OBE, Master of Wine and Master Sommelier.

Vanessa Ward, business support manager at Durham Cathedral, said: "The Undercroft Restaurant is located in one of the most intact surviving medieval undercrofts in the UK and we have been working hard to organise a befitting gourmet event for this spectacular setting.

"We are thrilled to be working with Anton Edelmann and Gerard Bassett, who are renowned world-wide for their skill and expertise. Anton was very taken with the John Thacker cook book --and was delighted to produce a menu based upon the recipes but adding his own modern twist.

"We look forward to welcoming guests to the Cathedral for this authentic eighteenth-century three-course meal, which will celebrate both the setting of the Undercroft Restaurant as well as the history and heritage of Durham Cathedral and its remarkable collections."
