Top Rocket Scientists to Brief Media on Missile Defense Technology.

Five of America's most experienced rocket scientists will be available to discuss missile defense on Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. in the Zenger Room at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization Office at the Pentagon has announced that it will conduct the next in a series of tests of the national missile defense system on Saturday, July 14.

The scientists are: William A. Davis, Jr., winner of the Presidential Award for Meritorious Civilian Service, with over 47 years experience in missile research and development; Raymond F. Askew, a veteran of 41 years' experience in space research, he's a former principal advisor in development of NASA's commercial use of the International Space Station; Carl Bayer, with 38 years' experience in defense and ballistic missile defense systems; Alan D. Sherer, previously responsible for top-level direction of all U.S. Army theater missile defense programs, including technical and engineering guidance, and non-nuclear hit-to-kill High Endoatmospheric Interceptor for strategic national defense in the U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command; and Frank Rose, who retired earlier this year as Director of the science Directorate for NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center, where he was responsible for research in microgravity materials science, astrophysics, earth sciences, advance optics, astrobiology, and biotechnology.

The scientists will respond to your questions -- in plain English -- about the science and technology behind the missile defense system.

Reporters outside Washington can participate by telephone, by dialing 800-633-8728.
