Top 50 EMS Providers Resume Growth in 2003 According to Manufacturing Market Insider.

Business Editors

NEEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 2004

Manufacturing Market Insider, a newsletter specializing in the EMS (electronics manufacturing services) industry, has released its annual MMI Top 50(TM) list of the world's largest EMS providers. Together, these 50 companies accounted for 2003 sales of $78.3 billion, which represented an increase of at least 7.4% from the prior year.

MMI estimates that its Top 50 accounted for 83% of EMS industry sales in 2003. "The MMI Top 50 can be considered as a proxy for the EMS industry," said John Tuck, editor and publisher of Manufacturing Market Insider. "So we conclude that the industry as a whole returned to growth last year after two years of slippage. Asia-based providers helped to lift the 2003 growth rate as nine of them reported 2003 sales increases of 20% or better."

MMI Top 50 providers were ranked based on 2003 sales in US dollars. In order, the top five were Flextronics, Solectron, Sanmina-SCI, Foxconn and Celestica. For a top-ten ranking, the minimum was $1.2 billion in revenue, up from $920 million the year before. To make the MMI Top 50, EMS providers needed 2003 sales of at least $142 million.

"Consolidation has claimed some companies previously listed on the Top 50. Others have dropped off due to sales declines. However, we continue to find new replacements, particularly in Asia. Of the seven providers added this year, four came from that region," said Tuck.

In addition to ranking providers by 2003 sales, MMI Top 50 listings include sales growth, number of employees, number of plants, facility space, space in low-cost regions, number of SMT lines and customer data. This special section was published in the March 2004 issue of MMI.
