Tony Parsons column: Prehistoric female tricks.
Byline: Tony ParsonsCONTROVERSIAL scientific research suggests that prehistoric women tricked prehistoric men into monogamous relationships by offering sex on tap, and not just when they were fertile.
Our male ancestors all thought that monogamy was a kind of wood. They liked to swing their barnacle-encrusted clubs in any number of caves. But our female ancestors got them to stick around by disguising when they were ovulating.
In most species, females have sex only when they are fertile. Dutch and Swedish scientists reckon that by carefully hiding their fertility, cavewomen tricked cavemen into staying faithful to just one Neanderthal babe.
There's only one thing wrong with this theory. It assumes that men want sex only if they think their partner can get pregnant.
But sex can be for recreation as well as procreation. Men don't just have sex because they want the species to survive. Sometimes they want sex because there's no football on Sky. They do it for fun, not family. Otherwise, oral sex and condoms would never have been invented. As Tina Turner very nearly said, what's evolution got to do with it?
